Usually, it takes approximately 90 days between lodging the application to the Consulate General and the receipt of the newly issued passports by the Consulate General from the Department of Immigration & Emigration, Colombo (this duration is subject to delay depending on the completeness, clarity and accuracy of the applications and the other supporting documents as may be deemed necessary by the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Colombo).
The applicants are advised to bring all original documents required with clear photographs etc. which meet the standards(please refer to the “Consular Section” of the website to obtain all required details in relation to submitting a complete application) to avoid any hassle in receiving the passports on time. Further, applicants are advised to be vigilant regarding their respective dates of validity of the passports, visas, etc. and lodge the applications in advance keeping provision for the period of time that it takes (i.e approximately 90 days) from the date the applications are lodged to the Consulate General, in order to avoid the hassle of not being able to receive the new passport before expiring the old one.
Since this Consulate General sends all passports application to Colombo for processing, expediting or fast tracking the process is not possible. Hence, the applicants are always advised to be vigilant regarding their respective dates of validity of the passports, visa and etc. and to lodge the applications in advance keeping provision for the period of time that it takes (i.e around 90 days) from the date the applications are lodged to the Consulate General, in order to avoid the hassle of not being able to receive the new passport before expiring the old one.
The usual period taken by this Consulate General for issuing a NMRP is five (5) working days. This will not be expedited unless the Consulate General finds a valid reason to do so. Hence, the applicants are advised not to request from the staff of the Consulate General to expedite issuing the NMRPs, unless there is a very specific need to do so.
Yes it is possible for the applicant. However, please make sure that the applicant is carrying the receipt issued by the Consulate General for collecting the new passport from Colombo. This authorization will not be given to any third parties.

Should we bring the original passports of parents in order to register the birth of a new born baby?
Yes. A photocopy of the same certified by an authorized officer of the Consulate General of Sri Lanka can be issued as a copy, which is equal to the original. However, the original Birth Certificate (issued by the Consulate General only, not issued by Sri Lanka) should be produced to obtain a copy of the original birth certificate.
If the Child is born outside Sri Lanka, the Citizenship Certificate is issued with the purpose of enabling him/her to apply for the Citizenship of Sri Lanka when he/she attains the age of 21. Furthermore, since the passports for the new born babies are issued for three (03) years at the initial stage, the Citizenship Certificate is required to renew his/her passport after the said period. Therefore, the applicants are advised to keep track on their Citizenship applications and to notify the Consulate General/ Citizenship Branch of Department of Immigration and Emigration in case if the Citizenship Certificates are not received on due time.
There is no mandatory requirement as both the parents should be Sri Lankans to register a birth of a child. However, at least one parent should be a citizen of Sri Lanka for registering a birth of a child at the Consulate General.
