Political issues prevailing in the country for over 30 -40 years due to the difference in religion and nationality cannot be resolved over night and the progress of discussions recently initiated in this regard is visible at present, said Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesighe.
The Prime Minister was addressing the 29th commemoration ceremony of late artist, politician Vijaya Kumaratunghe yesterday (21st Feb.) at Bishop College, Colombo.
He said that the operation committee has discussed this issue in detail. It has also begun discussions regarding the devolution of power. The discussions are going on very openly for 14 months.
He also commended the immense service rendered by Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan towards the national harmony and the Parliament. Although some interested parties were trying to promote racism they were not successful. All the nationalities and the religions should respect others and allow others to practice their religions, the Premier added.
