The Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Dubai, with the support of the Sri Lankan expatriate community living in Dubai and Northern Emirates, private companies and individuals, donated an amount of approximately 4 million LKR in cash, in addition to the essential items airlifted to the flood and landslide victims of Sri Lanka.
The above sum, donated by a number of companies and individuals, was remitted to the account of the Ministry of Disaster Management of Sri Lanka for the provision of facilities to the flood and landslide affected victims of Sri Lanka. Additionally, with the support of the three Airlines namely; Sri Lankan, Emirates, and Qatar, the Consulate General has been able to airlift four (04) consignments including
100 nos of foldable mattresses, 200,000 Nos of Water Purification tablets, consignment containing 3,750kg of Adult and Baby Milk Powder, blankets, emergency lamps etc, and a consignment weighing 4000 kg with instant noodles and sanitary napkins,
donated by some well-wishers across Dubai & Northern Emirates. All the above items were collected in the immediate aftermath of the floods and airlifted to Sri Lanka on urgent basis.
The donations were made subsequent to a meeting held on 22.05.2016 in the premises of the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Dubai, under the stewardship of the staff of the Consulate General with the participation of the representatives from the Sri Lankan expatriate organizations based in Dubai, who responded swiftly to the appeal made by the Consul General of Sri Lanka at the time of disaster. The Consul General expressed his gratitude personally on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka to these organizations and individuals later.
The Dubai-based print and electronic media, namely Khaleej Times and Daily Thanthi also contributed for the provision of publicity to the appeal made by the Consulate General and thereby to mobilize positive responses.
