Control price on white sugar and chicken removed; No shortage during festive season

Steps have been taken to issue the gazette notification removing the control price for white sugar and broiler chicken, Minister Rishard Bathiudeen said.

This decision was taken at the Cost of Living (CoL) Committee considering the requirement of the consumers for white sugar and broiler chicken, and the imported price as well as the market price, he said.

Accordingly the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has decided to remove the control price of Rs. 93.00 on white sugar and the control price of Rs. 410.00 on chicken (with skin) and of Rs. 490.00 on chicken (skinless).

Hasitha Thilakarathne, Chairman, CAA said that there was a request to the CoL Committee to remove the control price on while sugar and chicken. The gazette notification related to the control price removal was ready for printing yesterday.

The Ministry of Industry and Commerce said that there is no room for any shortage of sugar and chicken during the coming festive season. The announcement issued by the ministry further said that there are enough stocks of sugar in the market and they will be able to supply the necessary quantities of chicken to the market.
