Enshrining of the traditional sacred relics in the dam of the Kaluganga reservoir of the Moragahakanda – Kaluganga project will take place today (25th July) under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena.

The Moragahakanda – Kaluganga project was inaugurated by the President Maithripala Sirisena as the then Minister of Agriculture in 2007.

The entire project implemented with an investment of USD 1,300 million will add an additional 25Mw to the national grid. And it is also expected to bring a durable solution for the Chronic Kidney Disease caused by the water in the dry zone.

After the completion of the work, the Moragahakanda – Kaluganga reservoir will be supplying water for 82,000 hectares of cultivation fields in Trincomalee, Polonnaruwa, Matale, and Anuradhapura districts. Around 200,000 families in Northern, North Central, and North Western provinces will be the direct beneficiaries of the project.

The construction work of the Moragahakanda reservoir has now been completed up to nearly 75% and will be concluded by this December. The Kaluganga project is expected to be completed by 2018.

According to the Deputy Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment Anuradha Jayarathne, 3,162 families who were displaced due to the development project are now being resettled in suitable alternative lands with all the facilities and the infrastructure facilities. They are compensated by the government through the Mahaweli Development and Environment.
