President Maithripala Sirisena says Sri Lanka’s policy is to achieve development and eliminate poverty from the country. He said it is the way to ensure reconciliation in the country.

He was speaking after accepting credentials from new ambassadors of the Republic of Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Mexico and Greece.The credential ceremony was held today (July 21) at the President’s House.

Mrs. Melba Pria Olavarriet, the Mexican Ambassador in Sri Lanka said while Sri Lankan tea is famous throughout the world, Sri Lankan cinnamon is equally popular in Mexico and 80% of the cinnamon requirement comes from Sri Lanka.

“Sri Lanka and Greece has been continuing trade relations for a long time. The two countries should further strengthen the cooperation on naval and maritime affairs”, the new Greek Ambassador Mr. Panos Kalogeropoulos said.

Mr. Joado Carmo Ataide da Camara, Ambassador of the Republic of Portugal stated that Portugal and Sri Lanka should improve their friendship and cooperation.

Mr. Brian McElduff, the Irish Ambassedor said that there are similarities between the education systems of the Ireland and Sri Lanka and the two countries can enhance their cooperation in education. “We can share our experience on this regard”, he said.

Responding to the new diplomats, the President said the foreign policy of Sri Lanka is friendly to every country in the world. “Our objective is to provide every good thing to our people, offered by the foreign countries”, he said.

Speaking at the occasion, Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera said while Sri Lanka is marinating trade agreements with India and Pakistan, it will expand it with China as well in the future.

Secretary to the President P. B. Abeykoon, Secretary to the foreign Ministry Mrs. Chitranganee Wagiswara also participated in this occasion.
